Gluttons For Junk
Privacy and security issues are exacerbated by the hysterical amassing of useless data by software engineers who should know better. Mostly in the name of user-friendliness, this 'junk' is left to accumulate all through a Windows computer.
You'll find it in your official 'TEMP' directory, with no basic system function to clean it out; it amasses in the Registry, where information about Start menu items dating back several years and no longer existent can be seen; it piles up because 'uninstall' programs are rarely as conscientious as the 'installs'; in short, it accumulates everywhere.
And so it becomes obvious that privacy, security, and system maintenance are all part of the same thing, and that no matter if you have something to hide or not, you need to get rid of the 'junk' anyway, because it is ruining your machine.
What Not To Do
Software that claims to rid your system of this 'junk' should not make matters worse. Unfortunately, most of the available products do, and some are worse than others. It's admittedly hard to figure out where to go.
Vendor Claims
Start by taking a cold look at the product presentations. Are they engineered to make you paranoid? Are they instead factual? If they're in the former category, you should dismiss them immediately; if they're in the latter category, you need to know a bit more about how such products work.
