Rainmaker Redux XV:

RAMpage RESponds

The fun - as it would turn out - was just beginning. Trusty Bloatbuster™ Blofeld again provided the vital link - this time to old Jerry Pournelle, who was suddenly swearing by a utility called MemTurbo. Jerry made his retreat before he even went on the attack, however, citing Fred Landa of WinMag - another hot link.

And Fred Landa votes for RAMpage - despite his own good advice.

So, obviously, both these rainmakers could be expecting a little something to drop into their electronic mailboxes.

The RAMpage story is particulary interesting: it's like the story of the gooney bird which can fly so fast in a circle it can eat up its own tail and disappear into thin air. For all practical purposes the author of RAMpage states unequivocally that his utility can do nothing at all. But claims had been made, if not by him, then by others, and in particular a claim that it could ferret out and free unused DLLs.

Here is the great RAMpage exchange:

Hi John!

Saw Fred Langa's interesting article series. He mentions your program.
Of course you knew that?

I get the impression this utility is not for use with NT? Is that
correct?

It works fine on NT. As to whether its of any use, (on any OS), is
debatable. Read the FAQs, Fred's series, (very good), and about a million
other sites on this topic.
Fitz.

Admirable! The author declares that the application is of no use!

So why not take it down? Why not indeed?

Now here comes the trick question:

Hi John,

Thanks for writing.

Ok, if it works on NT - I'm dying to know this - how can it find DLLs
left hanging in memory?

And right as rain (pun intended), here comes the nasty reply:

Read the FAQs and you'll see I don't know either.
