Can You Canoe?

Hi there!Solve this puzzle and win a prize!

Two pot bellied beer guzzling trout fishermen are planning to meet in their canoes on a very swift stream. The one pot bellied beer guzzling trout fisherman is to paddle downstream; the other pot bellied beer guzzling trout fisherman is to paddle upstream (natch); and they start out at exactly the same time and they are exactly two miles apart, and we may assume the stream is straight as an arrow.

The strength of these two pot bellied beer guzzling trout fishermen is the same: on still water both pot bellied beer guzzling trout fishermen can paddle at three feet per second. But this stream is very swift, and its current runs at exactly five feet per second (downstream).

At exactly ten minutes after their start, a motorboat passes on the right of the pot bellied beer guzzling trout fisherman paddling downstream. The wake after this boat is so strong that for three minutes this pot bellied beer guzzling trout fisherman is forced to paddle at a forty five degree angle which effectively reduces his speed at that time by one half.

Exactly fifteen minutes later this same motorboat passes on the left of the other pot bellied beer guzzling trout fisherman (who is paddling upstream), and the effect is even worse on him (for he is of course more tired). He needs to paddle for all of four and one quarter minutes at a forty five degree angle, and his effective speed is reduced by two thirds.

And although we may say that their initial speed in each case is three feet per second on still water, they do tire, and at the rate of 10% reduction in speed per quarter hour for the pot bellied beer guzzling trout fisherman paddling downstream, and at the rate of 15% for the pot bellied beer guzzling trout fisherman paddling upstream.

A short time before they meet, the pot bellied beer guzzling trout fisherman paddling upstream decides he is too tired to go on, and so paddles over to land, gets out of his canoe and pulls it up on land, plucks a can of ice cold Coors out of his cooler, and sits down to enjoy his beer and the weather. From the time this pot bellied beer guzzling trout fisherman starts paddling to shore, until he is seated on the shore with his can of Coors, two minutes and forty five seconds elapse. His forward progress up the stream for this time is minus two and one quarter feet.

The can of Coors contains exactly 12 fluid ounces of Rocky Mountain spring water beer, and the pot bellied beer guzzling trout fisherman guzzles his beer at the rate of 1 1/6 fluid ounces per minute for the first two minutes, and at the rate of 5/6 fluid ounces per minute thereafter. When he is finished drinking his beer, he crunches the empty can (this takes five seconds, he enjoys it) and tosses it over his shoulder into the undergrowth behind (this time is negligible), whereupon he sees the other pot bellied beer guzzling trout fisherman finally paddling into view.

At the exact moment the second pot bellied beer guzzling trout fisherman makes it to shore, both pot bellied beer guzzling trout fishermen look up straight into the sky and note that the sun is at its zenith, i.e. that the exact time is twelve noon.

At what time did the two pot bellied beer guzzling trout fishermen begin their journey?

On what day?

Games to Play at Home

Hi there!Remember: Always seek the supervision of a parent or guardian!

  1. Have your parent or guardian buy a dozen different candy bars for you. Then open each one and count how many candy bars are inside each wrapper.
  2. Find two unopened bags of Doritos lying around the house. Open the one bag and count how many Doritos are inside. Convert this number to octal and then binary.
  3. Have your parent or guardian sit on the other bag of Doritos. Then open it and do the same as above. Were there more Doritos in the second bag? Can you explain why?
