Power Shift at Microsoft II

December 21, 2001 9:10 PM UTC REDMOND WASHINGTON
Microsoft's new leaders hold press conference and present their credentials and vision of the future with the software giant.

Start is Play

Visions of Xbox? The new Windows XP SP1 desktop.

Dummy immediately announced a radical change for service pack 1 of Windows XP and a radical change to Windows architecture in general - removal of the notorious Start button.

'We've been getting more and more into games of late,' quipped the surprisingly glib new chief executive officer. 'We want to acccentuate more and more that using a PC is play and not work. Our new default desktop for Windows XP SP1 will reflect this.'

Dummy had been working behind the scenes with Go for several months. Go is the vice-president in charge of the Start button. 'But I haven't been made redundant', joked the young executive. 'I am now in charge of the Play button instead!'

Dummy dismissed murmurs about his presence on the desktop.

'I'm a lot of fun, and PC users understand this.' Even Go supported his colleague and new boss. 'I would have liked to pose for a desktop too, but this is Dummy's show all the way. There's no time for ego now. This has to be a team effort - to bring the most powerful and secure operating system in the history of the world to the ordinary PC user.'
