XPSP2 Update III

Updated 27 August 2004 21:19 UTC
You want to be a hunter but find duck shoots all too difficult;
you want to be a baseball pitcher but can't hit the broad side of a barn with a watermelon from a foot away; become a Windows hacker!

We now have serious difficulties with Windows XP Service Pack 2: it turns out the 'security centre' can be spoofed. You can be told your OS, your AV protection, and your firewall are on and up to date when they're not.

Coupled with the relatively easy task of turning off Microsoft's firewall, this is the break hackers all over the world have been waiting for.

And they've waited a long time too - like several days...

When it comes down to it, a hacker in his underwear halfway across the world is better than Bill Gates in his underwear at home in Redmond Washington.

But there's more: it turns out that the only way you can get the NX bit to work is by removing XPSP2 from your computer.

And the IT gurus at the big e-zines are starting to lose it: Steve Vaughan-Nichols at eWEEK says he's had it already with SP2 - and once again is trying to tell everyone to get out and get Linux. And does he ever have a winning argument...

Full steam ahead!
