Zone Labs: Anatomy of a Coverup

How angels stay clean and scandals stay silent.

Part Twelve - So?

So we may then draw several incontrovertible conclusions.

  1. The Hackbusters applications are able to work behind Zone Alarm's Internet Lock which supposedly stops all Internet traffic.
  2. The only way for a firewall to stop all Internet traffic is to operate at the Link Layer or packet level.
  3. The patent application for Zone Alarm dismisses operations at the Link Layer or packet level as impractical.
  4. Therefore Zone Alarm does not try to stop applications such as those from the Hackbusters, and that is why these Hackbusters applications are able to penetrate Zone Alarm's Internet Lock. It's by design.

So if it's by design - and it is, obviously - why should Zone Labs worry so much about it?

That one's easy to answer. Significantly easier than analysing a fifty seven page patent application.

It's because the M3 - the McAfee Money Machine - is at risk.
