France

Liberté. Egalité. Fraternité. Hadopi?

Get It

Try It

PARIS (Radsoft) — Carla Bruni must be drinking heavily tonight. Along with her dwarf husband. France's HADOPI law is backfiring through a combination of outright greed and world-renowned incompetence.

France now have the repressive HADOPI 'three strikes' law which they somehow pushed through their national assembly despite the law being cited as unconstitutional. (This is the type of thing you can do if you have the backing of an IP lobby.)

So now their national telco (which used to be national but today is part of the notorious multinational Orange) are rolling out anti-P2P software. Get this: they're offering it to subscribers for a reasonable €2 surcharge.

[Yes that's right: the French are required by law to participate in the programme and install a stellar anti-P2P product (Windows only natch).]

No one knows yet if non-Windows systems will become illegal. Anything can happen in France these days evidently.

So the French scrambled to get something, anything up - because as everyone knows, recording artists (Carla Bruni and perhaps a few others) are hurting really bad because of file sharing. (Otherwise she'd be bigger than Gaga.)

And then French hacker 'Bluetouff' started using Wireshark to sniff the line. The klutzy anti-P2P 'software' communicated openly with a remote server, sending data in the clear, and the server even hosted a publicly accessible webpage showing the IP addresses connecting to it. Brilliant.

The page has since been taken down but whois information for the IP is as follows.

An administration portal was also online, accessible from the above IP, with the username/password set to - get ready - admin/admin.

This situation developed before the weekend; the geniuses at Orange were evidently hard at work all weekend long; no one knows what's happening now and 'Bluetouff' hasn't come back with any updates (if he still has his liberté).
