The destruction of Iraq: all for the oil whammy. A ten year war. The synergies for profiting have been spectacular. The death and destruction have been wanton and sinister. And the only reason the US can no longer claim a permanent presence is because of WikiLeaks.

Colin Powell's WMD speech before the United Nations in 2003 has gone down into history. A visibly unsettled Powell did the bidding of his masters and spun the lies, but it was obvious even he didn't believe them. And good old Tony Blair was about to brief his cabinet at 10 Downing with the real truth: that they knew there were no WMDs but they were going in anyway, damn the Iraqis.

We have to remember as well what Saddam told the US in his death cell: that he was not about to outright admit he had no WMDs - Iran would in such case attack.

Nevertheless: the reports of Blix and ElBaradei were unequivocal. Time and again. There were no WMDs in Iraq, and Iraq was a devastated country with no capability of creating them in the first place.

Meanwhile in New York City: Bill Keller got his hack Judith Miller to write war propaganda based on spurious reports from a government source no one trusted, and CIA operative Valerie Plame's husband Joe Wilson was sent on a wild goose chase to Africa to find evidence of an Iraqi initiative that simply didn't exist. And for reporting the truth and for protesting to the media that his report was ignored, Sweden's premier political consultant Karl Christian Rove had his CIA operative wife outed.

Some consolation that she got a feature film with Sean Penn and Naomi Watts.

Dubya's father had done better. 'We can sell this one', he said on the White House lawn after being briefed on the situation in Kuwait. As was later revealed by Cablegate, the Iraqis had approached the US to find out if the US had any interests in Saddam's plan to invade. The answer received from the US was clear: no objections. And so the trap was sprung, and Dubya's father had another war he could sell.

And guess what! It turned out those dirty slimy Iraqis weren't lying after all! Blix and ElBaradei did know what they were talking about! And what did the US say? 'Gee where are those WMDs! We know they're here somewhere!'

Julian Assange famously quipped on 23 October 2010 in London that wars started by democracies always have to start with a lie. And his speech earlier that year in Stockholm derived its title from a quote from Aeschylus.

After more than 7 years of activities, the UN Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC) was officially closed down on 29 February 2008 following the Council decision in June 2007 to terminate its mandate.
