Red Hat Diaries/000d

Transitions

I'd been running Unix and C and PCs for quite some time when Ridley Scott made his commercial. I never owned a ][, but I knew about it and later flirted with a Lisa. I read all the articles at the time talking about the right side and the left side of the brain and how the Mac was going to revolutionise our way of thinking. And maybe it did. But Mac is not only 'graphical user interface'. It's also dependability.

Wintel boxes are headaches. They're cheap. Look at them. Learn to know where to look. Look at the hinges on the laptops. Listen to the towers. Try everything - just like that guy in the Best Buy commercial. Tinker with the CD bay, try a floppy, go into the system and do weird things - it's not your box, you don't have to worry about corrupting the Registry. See what the machine can take. Try a monkey test.

The world of Billg is literally Hell on Earth. Who in their right mind can like that guy? Or who, for that matter, can grin at Steve Ballmer? These guys are maniacs - they're fascists. They don't care about quality - they only care about ruling the world. Yes it's money to a certain extent, but it's also a question of being 'first'; it's territorial. Like a dog who's been peeing all alone in its neighbourhood all its life suddenly smelling the pee of another dog - that's Microsoft, sniffing pee. Their arrogance and ethics don't matter - it's right that their might makes, it is not about quality, it is not about getting product to the consumer, it is not about making clients happy, it is not about a happy union between corporation and public - it's about being the only discernible pee smell in the world. We want to be here alone - and if this makes us tons of money - good. We need money. We are kings of a new world and we are entitled to all the riches this new world has to offer. But it's not about money per se and it's not even about power either. It's simply about being the only dog allowed to pee on the block.

So how are you going to be satisfied with one of their boxes? The hardware is not going to make an effort to be better than the systemware or software - why should it? As Mark Minasi might say, it's the fact that people are conditioned - this shiteware with this stupid Windows is gonna crash all the time, who cares if the floppy drive falls out? Dummies R Us sell Makeshift Pros for twenty dollars, what's to lose? Everything else is junk, what does one more piece of junk have to do with anything?
