Dial-up modems are much better than they used to be, but they're still slow.

Cable modems are faster, but they carry with them a number of real dangers. You have to be protected against the pranksters of the net. Perhaps not surprisingly then, sales of 56.6 modems are increasing more than sales of cable modems.

Ideally, no web page should over-burden your web browser, but commercial sites are getting more sophisticated all the time, and the modern webmaster working on a T-1 forgets that most of the company's customers don't have a fraction of that speed. Whatever, having a high speed connection, such as a T-1, is going to make it a lot more pleasurable to surf the net.

Up until recently T-1 was a dream for home computer users, but no more. For T-1 in the states, visit MediaOne - they might very well be servicing your area. Prices are coming down all the time.
